Reps Move To Create Additional Local Govt Areas In Benue
The House of Representatives has moved to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to allow the creation of additional Local Government Areas in Benue State.
The proposal, contained in bill HB2527 and sponsored by Rep. David Ogewu of Oju/Obi Federal Constituency (APC), scaled second reading on Tuesday after extensive debate on its general principles.
Presenting the bill, Ogewu said the amendment would strengthen grassroots governance by bringing government closer to the people. He explained that Benue’s vast landmass and increasing population made it necessary to establish more councils to ensure equitable development and efficient administration.
The motion was seconded by Rt. Hon. Chinedu Ogar, representing Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency, who described the move as a positive step toward deepening democracy and improving service delivery in rural communities.
Ogewu expressed confidence that the bill, once passed into law, would pave the way for the creation of new LGAs in Benue, particularly in his constituency.
He also recalled that former Governor George Akume had made similar but unsuccessful attempts in 2007 to create additional local government areas for better administrative efficiency.
The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative action.
