Reps Summon NCDC Over Alleged Gas Emission In Abuja
The House of Representatives Committee on Environment has summoned the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Olajide Idris, over the alleged release of gaseous substances into the atmosphere in Abuja.
The summons follows a petition concerning the emission of gaseous and chemical substances in the Gaduwa area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which has sparked environmental and health concerns among residents.
In an invitation letter dated June 19, 2025, and signed by Committee Chairman Michael Irom Etaba, the DG is expected to appear before the committee on Tuesday, June 24, to explain the nature and source of the reported emissions, as well as the NCDC’s role in responding to the situation.
The committee also directed the NCDC to provide any preliminary findings on potential health risks and detail both immediate and long-term measures to prevent a recurrence.
The letter emphasised the strategic role of the NCDC in public health protection and stated that the appearance was part of the House’s constitutional oversight responsibilities.
Dr. Idris has also been asked to come with relevant officials, technical reports, and materials that will aid the committee’s investigation.
