Debate on the 2026 Appropriation Bill will begin on Thursday (today) as the House of Representatives commits to scrutinising allocations to critical sectors of the economy, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu has said.

Kalu disclosed this at plenary while urging lawmakers to carefully study the budget proposal and come prepared with observations and inputs for the debate.

The N58.18 trillion budget was read for the first time on Friday following its presentation by President Bola Tinubu before a joint session of the National Assembly.

The proposed budget has attracted scrutiny from some civil society organisations, which have warned against a repeat of the poor performance recorded by the 2025 budget.

Kalu also said at the resumption of legislative activities on Tuesday that the House would give timely consideration to key legislative matters in 2026.

He listed the 2026 Appropriation Bill, the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, and the constitution review process as top priorities for the year.

The Deputy Speaker assured that members of the House would work closely with their counterparts in the Senate to meet the expectations of Nigerians in the new legislative year.
