Residents Admonished To Be Extra-vigilant

By Murtala Agboola

Nigerians have been admonished to be extra vigilant about things that go around in their neighbourhood and report any infringement of the law to the police.

The advice came from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ataoja Police Division, Ataoja Estate, Osogbo, Mr. Clement Agbemoroti, at the monthly meeting of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) recently.

Agbemoroti, a Superintendent of Police was represented by the District Criminal Officer (DCO) Mr. Adeniran Emmanuel, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

In response to reports of attempted crimes in their communities, the police Chief alluded to the fact that security is the business of all members of the community and not the police alone.

In view of this, Agbemoroti, stated that besides reporting any crime to the police on time, members of the PCRC should encourage the communities to be extra-vigilant to curtail younger elements who are in desperate need for money at all cost.

“The general trend in town among the young elements in the society is the get-rich quick syndrome which has led some to internet fraud popularly called yahoo, yahoo and ritual killings.

“Parents should counsel their daughters to know people they associate with, as some of the relationship they maintain with men only help to destroy their lives besides defrauding them”, he noted.

He cited a particular instance where a young man defrauded a lady student whose father transferred money to her on the internet, saying the guy made use of the lady, defrauded her by withdrawing the money sent to her by the father and broke the SIM card to prevent the girl detecting while telling her that he forgot the card in a mini bus called Korope in the town.

PCRC members were also called upon to be wary of some motorcyclists who troop into the interior parts of the communities claiming to want to carry passengers as early as 5.00am.
