- Anthony Faji
Some residents of Baruwa, Olosan, and Onward in the Ogo-Oluwa area of Gbongan/Ibadan Road, Osogbo, Osun State, have called on the state government to urgently address the indiscriminate disposal of refuse on drainages and waterways in the areas.
The residents who spoke to OSUN DEFENDER yesterday lamented the harmful nature of the situation, calling on the relevant authorities to act fast so as not to further endanger the lives of the people.
A resident of the Olosan area, Mr. Bayo Lawal, said the incident that has been prevalent in the last few months is capable of resulting in communicable and non-communicable diseases.Â
Lawal stressed the need for the Ministry of Environment to wade in to forestall a breakout of diseases.
Also, a businesswoman, Mrs. Esther Afolabi, noted that the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage could lead to flooding in the state capital.Â
Afolabi stressed further that if the drainages are clean, it would make for an easy and free flow of water, especially, as the rainy season is fast approaching.
She suggested a disciplinary committee for proper monitoring and discipline of people who fail to abide by the code of conduct in keeping the environment healthy for the occupants in the area to avoid subsequent occurrences.
The duo called for more efforts by the government to ensure adequate sensitisation for members of the public on personal safety, and being agents of social growth and progress.
