Residents Call Out Govt Over Increasing Rate Of Refuse On Osun Roads
Residents of Osogbo metropolis have called out the Osun State Government following heaps of refuse that have taken over major roads, especially around school environments, raising fears of possible disease outbreaks.
A facebook post by a concerned citizen, Busari Adesewa, brought attention to the deplorable state of Ayetoro Junction Osogbo, an area housing two major secondary schools; St James Grammar School and Adenle Secondary School.
She wrote, “Osun Ministry of Sanitation and Environment, this is what you suppose to be doing ooo and not keep extorting money from we shop owners,” tagging prominent social media voices and aides of Governor Ademola Adeleke, like Sola Isola and Oluniyi Hisamotu McMalaga, and pleading for the matter to be channeled to the appropriate authorities.
Adesewa also highlighted a growing health hazard posed by beggars in the area who reportedly defecate and urinate against the school walls.
She questioned, “Should we wait until there’s a cholera outbreak before actions are taken against this menace?”
She also expressed frustration over the alleged extortion of money from shop owners by the Osun Ministry of Sanitation and Environment, instead of focusing on their core responsibilities.
This situation has sparked wider public outrage, with residents questioning the effectiveness of the weekly Thursday shop closure directive, a state policy mandating that shops remain closed until 9 a.m. for environmental sanitation. Many now see it as a cosmetic policy with little or no impact on the actual cleanliness of the city.
The calls for urgent intervention are growing louder, as citizens demand proactive steps from the Ministry of Sanitation and Environment to address mounting waste and prevent an impending health crisis.
