A tragic incident has sent shockwaves through Amaimo community in Imo State, where a teenager was reportedly shot dead by a Catholic priest during the 2024 New Year crossover service at St. Columbus Catholic Church.
The incident, which has left many in disbelief, allegedly occurred when the teenager was celebrating the arrival of the New Year by igniting fireworks, commonly known as knockouts, outside the church premises.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the clergyman, angered by the teenager’s actions, confronted him in an attempt to stop the fireworks display.
What started as a verbal altercation allegedly escalated into a violent confrontation, resulting in the Reverend Father reportedly opening fire on the boy.
The victim, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, was said to have died on the spot, casting a dark shadow over what should have been a night of joy and celebration.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents of Amaimo, with many questioning the clergyman’s possession and use of a firearm. Community members have called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
“This is shocking and unacceptable. How could a man of God carry a gun, let alone use it in such a manner? We demand justice for the boy,” an angry resident lamented.
The Amaimo Divisional Police Headquarters has reportedly been notified of the incident, but authorities are yet to issue an official statement.
The church leadership has also maintained silence, further fueling speculations and unrest within the community.
