Rivers PDP Unbothered By Rumours Of Fubara’s Possible Defection To APC
The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed speculations that Governor Siminalayi Fubara may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that any political decision he makes remains personal.
State PDP chairman, Dr Robinson Ewor, said in a telephone interview on Wednesday with Vanguard that he was not aware of any such move and that the governor had not communicated any intention to leave the party.
He stressed that Fubara, like every other citizen, has the right to pursue political interests as long as such decisions benefit the people of Rivers State who elected him.
Concerns about the governor’s possible defection grew after he was sighted on Monday with Imo State Governor and APC Governors’ Forum chairman, Senator Hope Uzodimma, during a visit to President Bola Tinubu.
The speculations were further fuelled by the governor’s statewide broadcast on September 18, where he resumed duties after six months of emergency rule but failed to acknowledge the role of the PDP in opposing the declaration.
During the emergency period, no fewer than 11 PDP governors had dragged the APC-led government to court, challenging the constitutionality of the decision.
On the threat by the state House of Assembly to probe former sole administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Etteh Ibas (retd), Dr Ewor said it was within the Assembly’s rights.
“The sole administrator cannot account to the Rivers people. But he can account to the House of Assembly. Rivers people didn’t elect him as their governor. Appointment of Ibas was unconstitutional and an act of illegality. It was unnecessary,” he said.
He declined to interfere in the planned probe, noting that the legislature had the power to act as it deemed fit.
On the peace deal between Governor Fubara and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, the PDP chairman urged both sides to make the terms public.
He stressed that ensuring the agreement holds would be in the overall interest of Rivers people and the state’s development.
