Robbery: Police Trying To Frame Me – Suspect

By Yusuff Oketola

A 42 years-old suspect, Babatunde Isaac has told a Magistrate Court in Osogbo that police framed him for robbery.

The suspect disclosed this under cross examination by the Police Prosecutor, ASP Wilson Mireti at the resumed hearing of his trial before the court.

Isaac has been arraigned before the court on two count charges of robbery and illegal possession of dangerous weapons.

The prosecutor has previously called four witnesses, who testified that the suspect intended to commit robbery and that he was the owner of a bag (an exhibit) before the court.

However, the suspect denied the ownership of that bag, telling the court that he was arrested with a nylon bag which contained his clothes and a loaf of bread, alleging that the bag has already been swapped by the police.

In his words, “I was returning from Ilorin, Kwara state, where I went to check my children who are staying with my mother because their mother was late. The car that gave me a lift drop me on the express road before I was accused by a man who inquire where I was going and I told him I was waiting for a bus to Osogbo.

“After he left, the police arrived and they accused me of robbery and before I could respond, I was hit with the butt of a gun and I woke up in the police cell.

The suspect who claimed to be a tailor told the court that he was forced to append his signature on the statement before the court without reading its content to his hearing by the police.

He also denied knowing any of the prosecution witnesses before the court.

The matter was adjourned till 28th of August for further hearing.
