Run-Off/Bye-Elections: IGP Restricts Movement, Bans VIP Aides, Escorts

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has rolled out measures to ensure a peaceful conduct of the 2024 run-off/bye-elections across 26 states on Saturday.

Some of the measures disclosed in a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Thursday include the enforcement of movement restriction and ban on VIP aides.

“Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has mandated a restriction of vehicular movement from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day in 26 states holding run-off and bye-elections on Saturday, February 3, 2024,” Adejobi said.

He, however, stated that essential services like the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accredited media, and emergency responders are exempted.

According to him, the IGP has also banned security aides to VIPs from polling booths and state-owned security outfits from election security management, aiming to prevent interference.

Emphasizing the commitment to a secure electoral process, Adejobi said that IGP Egbetokun has urged responsible conduct and warned of legal consequences for disruptions.

“Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to specified authorities,” the Police spokesperson added.

He has also directed the public to call the following numbers: 08034040439 (CP Elections); 08031230631 (Toll Free); 08057000001, 08057000002 (Complaint Response Unit).

Adejobi further said that the public can also reach the Police at @ngpolice (Facebook); @PoliceNG (X); pressforabuja@police.gov.ng (e-mail).
