Russia launched a massive overnight assault on Ukraine, deploying 400 drones and a ballistic missile that targeted multiple cities and severely hit energy infrastructure.

According to Ukraine’s air force, the attack focused on Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih, and Vinnytsia. Although most drones were intercepted, 57 of them, along with the missile, managed to hit 12 targets.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Wednesday confirmed the attacks on energy infrastructure, stating on Telegram, “We are now doing our best to restore everything in Kryvyi Rih, and power supply will be restored over the course of the day.”

Two people were reported dead in Kupiansk from a separate drone strike, while at least 15 others sustained injuries across the affected cities.

The head of Kryvyi Rih’s military administration, Oleksandr Vilkul, reported a prolonged attack involving 28 drones and a missile.

He said parts of the city had lost power and water. A 17-year-old boy was critically injured and is in intensive care.

In Vinnytsia, eight people were wounded, the interior ministry confirmed. In Kharkiv, Governor Oleh Syniehubov said at least 17 explosions were recorded during a 20-minute drone barrage, injuring three people.

Air defences were also activated in Kyiv, although no damage or casualties were reported in the capital, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

President Zelenskiy called for more support from international allies, urging increased air defences and stronger countermeasures. “Russia does not change its strategy,” he said. “To effectively counter this terror, we need a systemic strengthening of defences: more air defences, more interceptor drones, more determination.”

U.S. President Donald Trump referenced the escalating attacks this week as justification for approving additional weapons and air defence systems for Ukraine.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion over three years ago, thousands of civilians have been killed. Moscow continues to defend its strikes on energy infrastructure, claiming they support Ukraine’s military effort.

Ukraine has also conducted retaliatory strikes inside Russian territory, though on a smaller scale.
