Salary Delay: FG Pays Lecturers Shortly After ASUU Declared Nationwide Strike

The Federal Government, has commenced the payment of salaries owed to university lecturers, just hours after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared a nationwide strike over the delay in their June 2025 salaries.

OSUN DEFENDER exclusively learnt that their salaries have been paid on Tuesday morning.

ASUU had directed its members across all federal universities to withdraw their services following the Federal Government’s failure to pay salaries within the three-day grace period outlined in its National Executive Council (NEC) resolution.

Branches of the union at the University of Jos and the University of Abuja were among the first to comply with the directive.

Confirming the strike action, ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, described the salary delay as unacceptable, blaming the hardship on the transition from the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).

He, however, acknowledged that the immediate salary payment addressed only one part of the union’s grievances, stressing that the Federal Government still owed a balance of ₦10bn in Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).

He warned that failure to settle the outstanding EAA could trigger another round of industrial action.
