School Resumption: Parents Lament High Cost Of School Materials

By Tola Oyewale

As schools resumed for the 2017/2018 academic session on Monday, parents have lamented the high cost of school materials, in spite of the announced bouncing back and departure from recession in the country.

A parent, Mrs. Abimbola Adebayo said, the school materials are now more expensive, even more than the school fees itself.

Another parent who is also a civil servant, said many traders who sell the school materials were taking advantage of the poor economy in the country, knowing fully well that there was no other choice, as their children must return to school after the break.

In the same vein, a trader at Igbona market who sells school bags, shoes and other school materials said all these school items are now expensive compared to the previous year when the prices were more pocket-friendly.

A school teacher, Mrs. Odeniyi said the school materials, such as school bags, books, textbook and school fees have increased despite the economy situation the country finds itself.

She said most of the textbooks that would be used in this new session are now expensive.

Meanwhile, a visit to some of the schools showed that academic work has started fully in both the private and public schools, as teachers were seen in classes delivering lectures to students.
