The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State suffered another setback on Tuesday as scores of its members in Ayedire Local Government formally announced their defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), pledging loyalty to the Omoluabi Progressives.

The defectors, led by Otunba Architect Tunji Ogunrinu, a former Vice Chairman of Ayedire Local Council Development Area under the PDP, were received at the Oranmiyan House in Osogbo, the operational base of the Omoluabi Progressives.

Speaking on behalf of the new members, Alhaji Abdulganiyu Akeem, a former councillor in Ileogbo, said frustration with the ruling PDP prompted their exit, accusing the party of poor internal management and neglect of loyal members.

“Our people deserve better governance. It is time to arise and shine rather than continue suffering and smiling,” he declared.

Other grassroots leaders echoed the grievances. Prince Adetunji, popularly known as COSMO, alleged that ward and unit mobilisers had been sidelined despite their contributions.

Similarly, the Chairman of Idi Ogun Unit in Ileogbo 2 accused the party of favouritism, while Comrade Agbabiaka from Olupona and Toyosi from Kuta linked their move to admiration for the leadership style of former governor Rauf Aregbesola.

Several former PDP agents also expressed disappointment with the present government, claiming that their sacrifices during the last gubernatorial election had not been rewarded.

The defection exercise, moderated by Hon. Gbenga Ogunkanmi, a former member of the Osun State House of Assembly, was described as a significant gain for the ADC.

Ogunkanmi noted that the calibre of the defectors demonstrated growing discontent in PDP and readiness of opposition forces to consolidate ahead of future polls.

In his reaction, Alhaji Azeez Adesiji, Chairman of the Omoluabi Progressives, welcomed the new members, assuring them of full integration into ADC’s structures.

He said the party would continue to promote inclusiveness and participatory democracy, urging members to prioritise voter registration as the surest route to political change.
