Senate Approves Rivers 2025 Budget For Second Reading
The Senate on Wednesday approved the ₦1.48 trillion 2025 budget of Rivers State for a second reading.
The proposal was presented by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, who noted that the National Assembly had assumed legislative authority over the state following the declaration of a State of Emergency.
Backing the motion, Senator Solomon Adeola Olamilekan stressed the urgency of passing the budget to ensure the people of Rivers feel the impact of governance.
He said, “Mr. President, I am not exactly sure under what title this document is categorised, but from what I can see, it pertains to a budget under the state of emergency. I hereby support its passage for second reading so that the people of Rivers can feel the presence of government.”
With no objections raised, Senate President Godswill Akpabio conducted a voice vote and referred the budget to the Ad-hoc Committee on Overseeing the Rivers State of Emergency for further scrutiny.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Senate had announced that Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, would appear before a Joint National Assembly Ad-hoc Committee to defend the budget alongside other key officials.
