The Nigerian Senate has called for an urgent apology from the Libyan government following the alleged mistreatment of the Super Eagles upon their arrival in Libya for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Upper Chamber condemned the actions of Libyan officials as inhumane, shameful, and a serious violation of international norms and human dignity.

The Upper Chamber has also called for a holistic investigation into the ugly incident.

The resolution came after a point of order was raised by Senator Sumaila Kawu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Senator Kawu highlighted the terrible treatment endured by the players and emphasized that such behavior contradicts the spirit of sportsmanship, which is meant to promote unity and competition among African nations.

Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, echoed Kawu’s sentiments, labeling the incident as “terrible and condemnable.”

He urged that the matter be addressed diplomatically, allowing the Libyan authorities the opportunity to apologize to Nigeria for the incident.

Senator Jibrin stated, “What happened to the Super Eagles in Libya is not in tandem with the spirit of sports. We think this is a mistake that the Libyans should be given a chance to correct and apologize to the Nigerian government.”

He also emphasized Nigeria’s leadership role in African diplomacy and the importance of fostering friendly relations between nations.

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, also condemned the mistreatment of the Super Eagles and stressed that it is unacceptable and a breach of fair play principles in international competitions.

He called for a thorough investigation by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and appropriate sanctions against those responsible for the players’ mistreatment.

Senator Akpabio expressed solidarity with the Super Eagles and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), insisting that the rights and dignity of Nigerian citizens must be upheld and that the Senate will monitor the situation closely to ensure accountability.
