The moves by a Nigerian lawmaker to upgrade two Nigerian Polytechnics namely Ilaro Poly and Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, to Universities status got boost at the public hearing held in Abuja.
In a bill sponsored by Senator Solomon Adeola, Senator representing Lagos West at the upper chamber, he made cases for the two polytechnics to become Universities of Technology as well to grant legal status to Nigeria French Village, located in Badagry, Lagos State.
Findings revealed that concerned stakeholders of the three (3) host communities were also granted audience to present oral and written memoranda to support the bills.
Adeola explained that the bills are in line with his legislative duties and agenda to enhance and develop needed institutions and human resources as a representative of the people.
Adeola said, “the passage of the three bills would critically address the need to expand the chances of Universities admission seekers.
“The upgrades will also address to a large extend unemployment crises among our graduates, as well boost the economy of the host communities, States and the country”.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita, narrated that the upgrade of the listed institutions would definetely go a long way in expanding infrastructures and balanced access to education by Nigerians, likewise boost the scope of admission into Universities.
The bills were graciously supported by lawmakers and different concern stakeholders, among are; Professor Babatunde Aileru; Registrar of the Nigeria French Village, Professor Austin Moye; Dean of Faculty of Arts, University of Benin and President of University French Teachers Association in Nigeria, Dr. (Mrs) Lauretta Offodile; President of YabaTech ASUP, Apostle Shegun Shodipe; President Yabatech Alumni and Dr. Kunle Salako of Ogun State Ministry of Health.
Adeola, during the public hearing told the gathering that the agenda is a popular one and a worth course that must be achieved for the good of all.
