Senate To Screen New Service Chiefs Wednesday
The Senate will now screen the newly appointed service chiefs on Wednesday, October 29, moving the exercise forward from its originally scheduled date next week.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the change after reading a letter from President Bola Tinubu, requesting the confirmation of General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff.
Akpabio said the revision was necessary to allow the military chiefs to assume their roles immediately.
President Tinubu urged lawmakers to expedite the confirmation process to ensure continuity and effective coordination of Nigeria’s security architecture.
The Committee of the Whole is expected to conduct the screening during Wednesday’s plenary session.
The military reshuffle, announced a few days ago, saw General Christopher Musa replaced by Oluyede, a former Chief of Army Staff, as Chief of Defence Staff. Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye was retained as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
Presidential aide Sunday Dare explained that the changes were part of efforts to strengthen national security, noting that “all appointments take immediate effect.”
The move has drawn criticism, with the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) demanding clarity on the reasons behind the reshuffle.
ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi said, “Our position remains that the Federal Government owes Nigerians a categorical explanation about what truly happened,” citing security concerns in neighbouring Chad and the Sahel region.
