The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) in the state of Osun said the focus of this year’s World Environmental Day celebration would be to urge governments, industries, communities and individuals to partner in exploring sustainable alternatives to the use of single use plastics.
With the theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution”, the annual celebration in the state is slated for Monday, June 4 to Wednesday, June 6, with Drainage Cleanup at Isale-Aro, Novelty March between the Environment family team and the State Exco/Legislature Team at the Osogbo Stadium, awareness rally, tree planting and lectures at the De-distinguished Multipurpose Hall, Aje Int’l Market, Iwo road Osogbo, Osun State, as activities lined up.
According to a statement by the NESREA State Coordinator, Mr Maike Muhammad, the awareness would urgently reduce the production and excessive practice of single-use plastic that pollute the oceans, damaging marine life thereby threatening human health.
“NESREA has responsibility for the protection and development of the environment, bio-diversity conservation and sustainable development of Nigeria’s natural resources in general, as well as, environmental technology including coordination, and liaison with relevant stakeholders within and outside Nigeria on matters of enforcement of environmental standards, regulations, rules, laws, policies and guidelines.
The expected Speaker at the celebration, are Prof Joshua Ojo, from OAU, Ile-Ife to speak on the theme: Beat Plastic Pollution; Mr Oloyede Adelani, the lead consultant, Environmental Manager Consultant Ltd, Ibadan to speak on Environmental Governance & Best Practices and Mrs Folasade Omole who would be speaking on Taming the Monster of plastic pollution: The EPR Model.
