Six Arrested For Exploiting Sick People As Beggars In Anambra
Six individuals have been arrested in Anambra State for allegedly hiring and using sick people to beg for alms.
They were nabbed on Wednesday evening during a raid on an uncompleted building at Isu village in Oba, where they reportedly operated the illegal business.
The suspects—Doris Basil (28), Peter Ezedike (38), Susan Monday (27), Ogechi Okoro (27), Solomon Sunday (29), and Kenneth Achi (29)—were apprehended around 6:30 p.m. by a joint team from the Oba Divisional Police Headquarters and Anambra Vigilante group.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said officers recovered six phones and N82,400 in small denominations.
Four seriously ill persons, suffering from ailments such as brain tumours and breast cancer, were found in distress at the scene.
“The sick individuals were given immediate first aid and arrangements are underway for comprehensive medical attention and safe return to their families,” Ikenga said.
Ikenga also stated, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed deep concern over exploiting vulnerable individuals for personal gain.”
He added, “He referenced Section 419 of the Nigerian Criminal Code, which criminalises obtaining property under false pretences. The act is a felony punishable by up to three years in prison.”
According to the police spokesperson, “CP Orutugu also directed that the relatives of the ailing individuals be interrogated to determine any level of involvement or negligence.
“All suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation,” Ikenga said.
