Soldiers, Police Officers Engage in Physical Clash in Plateau State
At least two soldiers and two police officers were involved in a physical clash at a popular market in Jos, the Plateau State capital, causing panic among traders and residents.
The incident occurred at the GSM centre in the Hamaz area. While the exact cause is yet to be officially confirmed, eyewitnesses on social media suggest it started after a disagreement between a soldier and a roadside phone trader.
According to a Facebook post by Bello Lukman, the soldier became angry after the trader allegedly damaged his phone instead of repairing it.
When the soldier attempted to arrest the trader, a policeman intervened, urging that the matter be taken to a police station.
“The soldier called his colleagues, who arrived in a Hilux, beat up the policeman, wounded him, and took his gun,” Lukman wrote.
He added that other police operatives in the area were later withdrawn and that traders sought the presence of additional security agents to prevent further violence.
A possible bloodbath was reportedly averted after the policeman had earlier cocked his gun.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the clash, saying the situation had been brought under control.
The command’s public relations officer, SP Alabo Alfred, said the matter was taken seriously and investigated, adding that the personnel involved had been sanctioned by their respective agencies.
He assured residents that measures had been put in place to prevent a recurrence. “The misunderstanding between personnel of the two security agencies has been properly addressed,” SP Alfred said.
