Nigerian human rights activist and publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, has raised fresh dust in the ongoing legal battle against him, accusing prosecutors from the office of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of hijacking court proceedings during a session at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

In a video posted on his X handle in the early hours of Monday, Sowore alleged that prosecutors attempted to override the presiding judge, Justice Musa Suleiman Liman, during his cybercrime trial, claiming the courtroom was turned into a theatre of intimidation.

“They were controlling the court and the judge,” Sowore said. “But I was never going to let that go on.”

The video, which has since gone viral, captured a heated exchange between the activist and one of the prosecutors inside the courtroom.

The confrontation reportedly erupted after Sowore referred to IGP Egbetokun as an “illegal IGP,” arguing that the police chief remained in office despite reaching the mandatory retirement age for civil servants.

The comment, which angered the prosecutors, prompted them to clamp down on Sowore’s remarks in court, an action he described as unlawful and disrespectful to the court’s authority.

Sowore also expressed deep concern over what he termed the continuous weaponisation of the judiciary to suppress dissent and stifle opposition voices.

He accused Justice Liman of bias and revealed that his passport was seized without just cause, thereby preventing him from visiting his family abroad.

“This is not justice; this is persecution,” he fumed. “They’re all in bed together—the judiciary, the police, and the political class. But I will not be silenced.”

The fiery activist, who has long been a critic of the Nigerian government, ended his remarks with the call: #EgbetokunMustGo, reaffirming his resolve to keep speaking truth to power.
