Speakership Crises: DSS Storms Lagos Assembly, Seals Speaker, Deputy’s Offices

The coast seems not to be clear regarding the speakership crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly, as operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Police stormed the Assembly complex in the early hours of Monday.
According to reports, security personnel took over the premises at Alausa, Ikeja, sealing the offices of the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the Clerk of the House.
They also frisked passersby and maintained a heavy presence around the area.
The development follows the legal challenge by the embattled former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who has sued the state lawmakers over his removal from office.

Obasa, who was removed on January 13, 2025, while he was in the United States, described the process as a “coup,” a sentiment reportedly echoed by President Bola Tinubu.
Obasa has filed a motion at the Ikeja Division of the Lagos State High Court, seeking an accelerated hearing of his case as he challenges the legality of his removal.
The crisis has also divided members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the apex political decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, as debates over Obasa’s ouster continue to intensify.
