SSANU, NASU To Shutdown Campuses On Thursday

Doors to offices in Nigerian public Universities may be under lock once again, from Thursday, July 4, as the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) are planning an indefinite strike at the expiration of a two-week strike notice, over 4 months withheld salaries, and the unpaid 13 months salaries to Abia State University workers.

SSANU President, Muhammad Ibrahim at a briefing in Abuja said beyond the withheld and unpaid salaries, most institutions still owe between three and six months of the N35,000 wage award even as it accused the Federal government of being slow and dodgy with regards to announcing a new national minimum wage.

Other issues the unions concerned about are the limited number of educated individuals in the reconstituted Boards of Federal tertiary institutions and the proliferation of State Universities, amidst poor funding of existing ones.

The unions are equally demanding a quick fix to the nation’s security challenges, following the killing of a Deputy Vice Chancellor, of the Uthman Dan Fodio University in Sokoto.

Osun Defender recalls that academic lecturers, Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, had planned to down tools over allegations of neglect by the federal government.
