In a statement issued by a group of concerned educators, the late teacher was described as “a dedicated and disciplined professional whose life was cut short in the line of duty.”
“With deep pain and righteous indignation, we mourn the tragic and avoidable death of Mr Fatai Adegoke, a teacher who was attacked by his own students while trying to stop them from gambling during school hours. This horrifying act is not just an assault on one man, it is an attack on the entire teaching profession,” the statement read.
The group called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, the Teaching Service Commission, TESCOM, and law enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
They also urged that parents of the culprits be held accountable for failing to instill discipline in their wards.
Describing the incident as a reflection of moral decline within schools and homes, the educators emphasized the urgent need for stronger safety measures, moral education, and disciplinary enforcement in Nigeria’s public schools.
But a statement by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Oyo State chapter, said Adegoke died of died of cancer related illness.
The secretary of the union, Salami Olukayode, in a statement, said be deceased had nursed the cancer for years.
The statement reads, “The ttention of the state leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Oyo State Wing has been drawn to a publication that is currently trending on various social media platforms about the cloudy issue surrounding the death of a dutiful colleague of ours, Mr. Fatai Adegoke of a named public Secondary School in Ogbomoso axis of the state.
“A well circulated account of Ogbomoso based tabloid posited that Mr. Fatai Adegoke was unethically attacked by his student who ran foul of the school’s rule. It was held that the attack was at the point of administering punishment on the student.
“But, a reliable information gathered by the NUT due diligent search and investigation showed that, Mr. Fatai Adegoke died of cancer related illness which be had nursed for quite an age as against various opinions being held and peddled by varieties of social media bloggers. And, this was further corroborated and affirmed by a larger percentage of his family members during his burial and subsequent (fidau) prayer held in his honour.
“It needs to be noted that various spirited individuals, colleagues, people of different religious faiths including the zonal leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), ANCOPSS and TESCOM in Ogbomoso did not forsake Mr. Fatai Adegoke when they were mostly needed.
“In fact, it was recorded that a huge amount of money was donated by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ogbomoso zone to cushion the effect of his medical bills while at Florence Hospital before he was transferred to seek an advanced medical treatments at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, and this was objectively done to safe his life unconditionally, but it pleases God to take his life as the Sole Author and Finisher of our faith…
“Discipline of students has no link with his death as it is being held by a fraction of the society who lack facts about his medical history all along.
“Having said this, we wish to advise the public, including social media users to be engaging in an adequate diagnosis of fact before news is casted so as to get better perspective of the inherent issues before being ignorantly shared. This, when properly done will help reduce peddling of cock and bull stories in our societies.”
Efforts to reach the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, for official confirmation were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
