Students React As OAU Increases Tuition Fees

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced the new school fees payable by both new and returning students of the institution ahead of the resumption for the 2023 academic session.

This was revealed to OSUN DEFENDER in a statement released by its Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju.

He said the revised fees are applicable to the 2023 academic session alone.

The statement noted that the adjustments were approved during an emergency meeting of the University Senate on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, and cut across various faculties.

According to him, “for those in the Faculties of Arts, Law and Humanities , the ‘freshers’ will pay #151, 200 while returning students of the same faculties will pay #89,200.

“For those in the Faculties of Technology and Science, the new students will pay #163, 200 and the returning students of the same faculties are to pay #101, 200.

“In addition, the new students being admitted into the Faculties in the College of Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Pharmacy are to pay #190, 200 ( new students) and #128, 200 ( returning students) respectively. “

Students Reactions

Students of the university have called on the management of the learning institute to reconsider their decision to increase tuition fees.

A 300-level student from department of Chemistry who simply identified himself as Seun stated: “Instead of shocking us this much, they could have at least added it little by little, not just drop this huge amount on us.”

A part four student from department of Religious Studies, Mutohir Abdulhameed urged the school authorities to reconsider the tuition fee hike, taking into account the diverse backgrounds of their students and the social impact it may have.

A part one student from department of History who craved annonymity said, “Thank God, I am just in part one. I will surely drop out. I am the only one taking care of myself and pay my school fees. No one is sponsoring me. This is too bad.”

Students Union Reaction

In a statement signed by the Students Union President, Abbas Akinremi, Secretary General, Akinboni Opeyemi and PRO, Omisore Elijah urged the students of the university to remain calm and promised to reach out to the necessary quarters on how to rectify and bring back normalcy that will be generally accepted.
