Super League Controversy: Premier League clubs Withdraw

Following the massive condemnation that followed the announcement of the Super League, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham have all withdrawn their involvement in the League.

Protest broke out at Stanford Bridge on Tuesday, right before the Chelsea Brighton match. It took the intervention of club legend Petr Cech who appealed to the angry fans and asked for more time.

Chelsea thereafter signalled their intention to withdraw, and had begun documentation when Manchester City announced their withdrawal.

The other four teams have all now formally done same.

Manchester City confirmed they have “formally enacted the procedures to withdraw” from the Super League.

On their part, Arsenal apologised and said they had “made a mistake”, adding they were withdrawing after listening to their fans and the “wider football community”.

“Our involvement in the proposed breakaway league has been discontinued”, said Liverpool.

Manchester United said they had “listened carefully to the reaction from our fans, the UK government and other key stakeholders” in making their decision to not take part.

Daniel Levy’s Tottenham said the club regretted the “anxiety and upset” caused by the proposal.
