A group known as Omo Epe duro fun Ambode recently stated its resolve to organise a Million Man March on Saturday June 16th, 2018, in Epe in commemoration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s birthday.
A statement signed by its chairperson, Princess Bolanle Kazeem, said the 1 million man march is to, not only commemorate the birthday celebration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, but also an expression of solidarity in endorsement of his second term bid.
“We, the members of the CNI wholly support and endorse the initiative, and this position is informed by the unprecedented landmark achievements, in terms of projects and good governance thus far recorded under the administration of Ambode.
“There is a common and apt saying that one good turn deserves another, and we believe in this dictum.
“This is especially because the 1 million-man march is part of the concerted efforts to mobilise voter’s registration on a mass scale and increase the level of participation in our democracy, by getting many people acquire the permanent Voters card.
“It is a known fact that there is voter apathy in the country and we, as a concerned Civil Society Organisation (CSO) are ready to play our part towards redressing this, beginning with the youths who are key change agents in any country.”
“We are similarly persuaded that effective mobilization of the youths presents a good opportunity to sensitise them towards redirecting their focus and energy to the fulfillment or exercise of their civic responsibilities, so that the governor who has demonstrably done well in his first term could be returned for a second term.”
“And this is another reason we welcome the Omo Epe duro fun Ambode initiative, in that it targets those that are now eligible to vote by virtue of attaining the voting age of 18 and above.
“We are impressed that the I Million Man March, which will commence at 10.am on June 16th with 3 three different points of convergence, has the endorsement of all the traditional rulers in Epe division, the entire political class, clergy men and the entire sons and daughters of Epe division.
There are well over 2 millions youths of voting age in the State and a reasonable percentage of them are in Epe as a result of the unprecedented migration shift brought about by the development across that state particularly Epe.”
“The registration drive in Epe division is important in light of the dismal and mediocre numbers of votes in the last 2 elections. Those elections turned out a combined votes of 64,000 out of 129,000 registered voters, representing less than 25% of the total number of registered voters.
“This time round, it is the goals of the group to help push the voting record from 32000 to a million in Epe division in the next election . For CNI, this is an achievable aspiration, given the level of enthusiasm and the eagerness to support Gov Akinwunmi Abode for the unprecedented infrastructural regeneration witnessed in the division since the inception of his administration.”
“We equally join the call on the INEC officials in Epe division to increase the numbers of registration equipment from 2 to 10 so as to accommodate the surge in the registration efforts.
“The current situation of 2 registration machines serving the division is to say the least, unexpected, for out of the two, one was actually domiciled in the INEC office, leaving just one to serve the mass number of people. We hereby call on INEC to improve the situation by increasing the number of registration machines deployed to Epe.
“Because we love progress and positive governance as thus far demonstrated by Ambode, we join the group, to call on the sons and daughters of Epe division to come out in large numbers to be part of history.”
