Suspected Cultist Remanded In Prison For Terrorising Osogbo

A 32-year-old suspected cultist, Olamide Atoyebi, has been remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre for allegedly terrorising Osogbo and its environ.

Atoyebi, a suspected member of Aiye Confraternity and others at large, according to the charge sheet, were accused of unleashing terror on Osogbo and causing palpable fear among the residents of the state capital. The defendant was also said to unlawfully have in his possession one locally made cut-to-size single barrel gun and two live cartridge which he could not give satisfactory account of.

Atoyebi was arraigned before the court on a five-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful society, breach of peace, unlawful possession of firearm.

According to the charge sheet obtained by OSUN DEFENDER yesterday, the accused person and others at large committed the offence on July 27, 2022 at about 5pm at Agunbelewo Area, Osogbo.

The alleged offence contravened Sections 516, 64, 249(d) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vo.II, Laws of Osun State, 2002 but the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him.

Defense Counsel, Oladipupo Olatunbosun, prayed the court to admit the defendant bail on a liberal term, noting that he would provide reliable surety to stand for him throughout his trial.

In his ruling, the presiding Magistrate, Adekanmi Adeyeba, directed the Defence Counsel to present a formal bail application.

Adeyeba, however, ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre.

The case was adjourned till today, September 2, 2022 for consideration of bail.
