At least 17 people have been killed in a violent attack on Abande settlement in Mbaikyor Ward, Turan District, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.

The attack, which took place on Tuesday, threw the community into chaos as gunmen reportedly invaded the area, forcing residents to flee for safety.

Local sources identified the attackers as suspected armed herdsmen.

As of 11:55 p.m., some of the victims’ bodies had been evacuated to Jato Aka by operatives of the mobile police deployed to the area.

Sources told DAILY POST that a mobile police officer on duty was also confirmed among those killed.

The incident has once again exposed the deteriorating security situation in Turan and surrounding communities, where residents say repeated violent attacks have left them living in fear.

Community leaders and residents are urging the Federal and Benue State governments, alongside security agencies, to intensify efforts to protect lives and property and put an end to the recurring violence.

Meanwhile, residents have appealed for prayers and support as the community mourns the victims.

Efforts to obtain comments from the Benue State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
