Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is now out of an induced coma and recovering after undergoing emergency abdominal surgery, according to a report by Mail Sport.

The Nigerian international was rushed to the hospital on Monday after it was confirmed he had suffered a life-threatening abdominal injury during Forest’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday.

Awoniyi had collided with the goalpost during the match and, despite initially continuing to play, was eventually forced off due to the severity of his condition.

Surgeons performed a complex procedure, after which the 27-year-old was placed in intensive care and kept in a medically induced coma.

He was closely monitored through the night and has since regained consciousness.

Reports say he was awake and able to speak with his family following the successful operation.

Awoniyi could not be substituted immediately during the game as Nottingham Forest had already used all their available changes.

Despite his evident discomfort, he attempted to play on in hopes of helping his team find a late winner.

His teammate, Ola Aina, expressed the squad’s concern and support for Awoniyi.

“This is our teammate and brother, and someone we spend most of the year with. It affects everybody in some sort of way,” Aina said.

“It’s horrible seeing someone you are close with go through something like this. I’ve sent him messages and I pray to God that everything goes well for him.”

Awoniyi’s recovery progress will be monitored in the coming days, with fans and teammates hopeful for his full return to health.
