Tapswap Trend: Why OAU Students Are Tapping Their Phone Screens

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have joined the new trend that has spread across Nigeria and other tertiary institutions.

Osun Defender observed that students of OAU from different levels have been seen tapping on their phone screens in pursuit of financial gain.

It was gathered that some of them even had the courage to tap the screen of their phone in a pretense of jotting what the lecturer was saying while having classes.

Tapswap, a popular clicker app, has taken the country by storm as users tap repeatedly on the icon in the centre of the Telegram Tapswap bot screen to mine coins. The app’s sudden popularity has sparked a nationwide phenomenon, with many Nigerians eager to cash in on the trend.

According to recent statistics, a significant majority of OAU students approximately 17,000 out of 25,000, representing about 68% are actively participating in the Tap Swap trend, with the actual number potentially being even higher.

While speaking with Osun Defender, some of the students narrated the reasons they joined the trend.

Olamide Adebiyi, a 300-level student of the Department of Economics stated that he started tapping his phone screen due to financial needs battling him.

He said, “I needed money to support myself and my family, and Tapswap seemed like an easy way to earn some extra cash.”

Another student of OAU, David Okunlola, a 200-level student of the Department of Political Science said he joined the trend to get money to pay his school fees,

According to him, “My parents couldn’t afford to pay my fees this semester, so I decided to try Tapswap to see if I could earn enough to cover the cost.”

Blessing Ajayi, a 100-level student of the Department of Biological Sciences, said she started tapping her phone screen because she had no one to fend for her.

“I’m an orphan, and I need to find ways to support myself. Tapswap seemed like a viable option, so I decided to give it a try.”
