Public school teachers in Oyo State on Monday staged a protest over the recent terrorist attack on schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state, calling for urgent government and security intervention.

Gunmen had on Friday invaded communities along the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis of Oriire in Ogbomoso, where they abducted students and staff of Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, L.A. Primary School, Esiele, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School.

The attack also left an assistant headmaster, Joel Adesiyan, and a commercial motorcyclist dead.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, confirmed that seven teachers were abducted, while the exact number of missing pupils is still being verified.

Makinde said a video received by the state government showed that one of the abductees, a mathematics teacher, had been killed by the terrorists.

He said, “What we know is that seven teachers in all were abducted and unfortunately, we got a video this morning that one of the teachers, the maths teacher, was killed by the terrorists this morning.”

Meanwhile, the protesting teachers, in their numbers, took to the streets chanting solidarity songs and demanding swift action from security agencies and the state government to rescue the victims.

They carried placards with inscriptions such as “Their deaths demand action”, “Say their name, remember their sacrifice”, and “Noble teachers gone too soon.”
