There is palpable tension in Kano as security operatives on Friday took over the palace of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, further intensifying the long-standing emirship dispute in the state.
The security forces barricaded the road leading to the palace, effectively cutting off access to the monarch’s residence.
The development, which has left many residents in suspense, comes just hours before Emir Sanusi was scheduled to accompany the newly-appointed Wamban Kano, Munir Sanusi, to his official district in Bichi.
The Emir was also set to hold a crucial meeting with a group of economists concerning President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills.
Attempts by newsmen to get a statement from the Kano State Police Command were unsuccessful as Haruna Abdullahi, the command’s spokesperson, abruptly ended the call when contacted for comments on the matter.

The move by the police has sparked widespread speculation about the growing tensions between the state government and the Emir, who was controversially dethroned in 2020 by then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje over allegations of insubordination.
Since his reinstatement in May, the Emirship crisis in Kano has continued to simmer, with rival factions vying for power and influence in the state.
The Kano State House of Assembly’s decision to repeal the law that facilitated Sanusi’s ouster in May has only served to fuel the political drama.
In a dramatic twist, Governor Abba Yusuf announced Sanusi’s reinstatement as Emir after signing the new Kano Emirate Council Law.
However, a federal high court in Kano issued a ruling that stopped the state government from enforcing the Emirate Council Repeal Law 2024, further complicating the situation.
