The Demise of Iconic Majek: The Mixture of Grace and Grass

Majekodumi Fashekun popularly known as Majek Fashek, took his last bow from d world
yesterday. Majek Fashek can be referred to as our own Bob Marley. There is no doubt Majek raised d bar for other reggae stars in Africa. He produced d hit song ” send down the rain”. Despite playing reggae music which has strong root in Jamaica, he fussed d beat with African percussion especially gangan. This made his own version of reggae music unique and more acceptable to african reggae music lovers. He was celebrated all over d world, he made a lot of money from many of his hit albums. At a point, he travelled to US. Probably to expand his marketing horizon. To me, that was d beginning of his problem.

Majek moving to America made him to blend with d culture of America. He loaded his body with drug and womanised like kilode. This became a big distraction to him. I was so shocked d first time I saw him on TV after he came back from America. He was a shadow of himself. Years of drug abuse has taken toll on his body. He was barely coherent in his speech, also with frail physique. My thought quickly started running riot. The lesson I learnt from his sojourn on d Earth is talent is not enough to live a fulfilled life. If discipline isn’t there, success can be a trap. If Majek didn’t go to America, probably abusing drug might not have arose or it may have become manageable. Location is everything in life. Location can nurture or change your nature. The story of this iconic African star is a story that started with talent ran with grace but as result of drug abuse ended in grass. I’m not sure our government help him too. I expected a responsible government to take over his rehabilitation program. Now he has gone. “Keregbe e ti fo o ti dehin lehin odo” All kinds of good speeches will be made by government officials to praise him. When he was on Earth, what did they do for him?

My advice to all d youths reading this piece is , talent isn’t enough. If u want to continue growing in grace with your gift, never forget to be closed and go along in d journey of life with d owner of your grace and talent, almight God.The road is treacherous, full of distraction. Don’t allow accolade or fame go into your head. Hence your talent will be a trap and make u to fall. Ur story too will be from grace to grass.

Majek conquered music world. Unfortunately, he was defeated by his appetite. Adieu great son of Africa.
