‘This Country Will Steadily Embarrass You’ – Amusan Blasts Nigerian Sport Authorities Over World Championships Kits
Former world champion and women’s 100m hurdles record holder, Tobi Amusan, has taken a swipe at Nigerian sports authorities over the kits provided for the country’s contingent to the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Just hours before the championships kicked off on Saturday, the hurdler expressed her frustration in a Snapchat video, accusing the Athletics Federation of Nigeria of unprofessionalism and poor coordination.
Amusan lamented that while other nations delivered well-packaged kits to their athletes in branded suitcases, Nigerians were handed theirs in nylon bags.
“This country will steadily embarrass you. Una come say make people nor switch allegiance? Una never ready!” she said in pidgin, hinting at the growing trend of athletes switching nationality.
The record holder further criticised the quality of the gear, disclosing that the athletes were given only two competition outfits.
“They gave us two. Everything two, una dey see. Oya. Competition gear wey be say if you sweat like this, the colour go dey peel for body. Where long sleeves? No singlet, no nothing. We never get clothes wey we go wear for them,” she complained.
Amusan also revealed that despite officials collecting athletes’ shoe sizes, no footwear was included in the kit.
“So as it is now, I have to wear my Adidas black tights. My fans, they collected our shoe sizes,” she said.
The 27-year-old capped her criticism with a caption on her video that read, ‘abeg which country dey find athletes’, a clear dig at Nigerian authorities and a suggestion that she could consider a nationality switch, similar to her compatriot Favour Ofili, who is reportedly heading to Turkey.
Nigeria has a 15-member contingent at the Tokyo championships, led by Amusan, who will line up against some of the world’s elite athletes as the competition runs from September 13 to 21.
