Calls For Dokubo’s Arrest, Condemns Army Double Standard
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has strongly condemned the Nigerian Army’s inaction against Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, a former Niger Delta militant leader over his threats against the army.
HURIWA described the Army’s verbal exchanges with Dokubo as pathetic, urging them to enforce the law through his arrest investigation, and prosecution.
Dokubo had previously threatened to shoot down military helicopters flying near his residence, to which the military responded by dismissing his remarks as laughable and challenging him to confront soldiers in combat.
Responding to the threats, HURIWA argued that Dokubo should be arrested and held accountable for his threats, stating that engaging in dialogue with him undermines the credibility of the Nigerian armed forces.
In a statement signed by Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the organization questioned whether the Defence Headquarters was deliberately ignoring videos showcasing Dokubo’s behavior, including those where he was seen wielding military-grade assault rifles
“It is disheartening to see the Defence Headquarters responding to Asari-Dokubo instead of enforcing the law through investigation, arrest, and prosecution, not only for his recent threats but also for past incidents where he was seen on video wielding military-grade assault rifles.”

The group expressed concern that the Army’s statement diminishes the institution’s stature, especially given the perception that individuals from certain political affiliations are treated with leniency, while others, particularly from the Igbo-speaking Southeast, are harshly punished.
HURIWA criticized the Defence Headquarters for allowing lawlessness to persist under the guise of democracy, suggesting that this leniency is linked to Dokubo’s friendship with the current president, who he visited shortly after taking office.
HURIWA also condemned the Army’s double standard, citing the raid on Nnamdi Kanu’s home, leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), after he was granted bail during Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
The orgsnidation therefore, called for Dokubo’s arrest, urging the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force to protect citizens staging peaceful protests .
