The Yobe State coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement (TIB), Abubakar Jawa, was arrested by security agents on Monday while gathering with other protesters ahead of a planned demonstration against the controversial Cybercrime Act.

The protest aimed to raise awareness about the implications of the law.

Jawa was arrested alongside four others: Mohammed Kayeri Adam, Suleiman A. Gambo, Maimuna Abba, and Abubakar Jawa.

The specific reasons for their arrest remain unclear, but the incident has drawn significant attention in the state.

SaharaReporters learned that the arrests occurred while the group was assembling for the protest.

In response to the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for Yobe State, Dungus Abdulkarim, denied any knowledge of the arrests, claiming that the police had not detained any TIB members or their coordinator.

He further stated that the police had made themselves available to provide security for the protest, but none of the group’s members had approached them for support.

“As far as the police are concerned, we don’t know any TIB movement coordinator or members in the state and we have made our doors open for any members or coordinator to come out and be identified with police so that police can provide security backing ahead of the protest. But we are yet to see anyone. So police have not arrested a TIB member or its coordinator,” he added.

This arrest follows a report from Sunday, when the Department of State Services (DSS) in Osun State invited Olasunkanmi Mary Oluwatosin, the Organising Secretary for the state’s TIB chapter, for questioning about the nationwide protest planned for April 7.

The TIB Movement had insisted on going ahead with the protest despite the arrests, which it described as a response to the “authoritarianism” of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the abuse of human rights, and the misuse of the Cybercrime Act.

The protest was titled: “Nationwide Protest Against Bad Governance and Suppression of Free Speech.”

In Osun, Oluwatosin was summoned by the DSS for questioning after receiving calls from a DSS official named Akin.

The summons was made through a WhatsApp message, and Oluwatosin confirmed that she was first contacted on Saturday and then called again on Sunday, inviting her to the DSS office for a “chat.”
