Tinubu Accepts Yakubu’s Exit As INEC Chairman, Confers National Honour On Him
President Bola Tinubu has officially accepted the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the completion of his second and final five-year tenure.
In recognition of his decade-long service to the nation, President Tinubu has conferred on him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday titled “President Tinubu Accepts INEC Chairman’s Departure, Bestows National Honour on Him.”
According to the statement, President Tinubu commended Professor Yakubu for his dedication to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy through the conduct of credible elections during his two-term leadership of the commission.
The President further directed the outgoing INEC Chairman to hand over to the most senior National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will oversee the affairs of the commission in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive successor.
Appointed in November 2015 and reappointed in 2020, Professor Yakubu is Nigeria’s longest-serving INEC Chairman. During his tenure, he oversaw the 2019 and 2023 general elections and introduced innovations such as the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal to enhance electoral transparency.
