Tinubu To Choose New INEC Chairman This Week — Report
President Bola Tinubu is expected to announce a new Chairman for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) this week, following the official exit of Professor Mahmood Yakubu from office after completing his second and final tenure.
According to PUNCH, President Tinubu will present the list of nominees for Yakubu’s replacement during the Council of State meeting scheduled to hold in Abuja on Thursday.
The Council, which comprises former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, all serving state governors, and other eminent Nigerians, is constitutionally empowered to advise the President on key national appointments, including that of the INEC Chairman.
Yakubu, who formally handed over on Tuesday, was succeeded in acting capacity by May Agbamuche-Mbu, a senior national commissioner and legal practitioner, pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.
In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed appreciation for Yakubu’s years of service and his contribution to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
“President Tinubu thanked Professor Yakubu for his services to the nation and his efforts to sustain Nigeria’s democracy, particularly through the organisation of free and fair elections throughout his two-term tenure,” the statement read.
In recognition of his service, President Tinubu also conferred on Yakubu the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
Onanuga added that the President had directed Yakubu to hand over to the most senior national commissioner.
“Professor Yakubu should hand over to May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will direct the affairs of the commission until the completion of the process to appoint a successor,” he said.
