The Presidency has confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will meet with former United States President Donald Trump in the coming days to discuss allegations of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria and issues relating to counterterrorism cooperation.

This was disclosed by Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

Bwala stated that the meeting will provide an opportunity for both leaders to address misconceptions about terrorist attacks in Nigeria and to strengthen joint efforts against global terrorism.

“Both President @officialABAT and President @realDonaldTrump have shared interests in the fight against insurgency and all forms of terrorism against humanity.

“President Trump has assisted Nigeria a lot by authorising the sale of arms, and President Tinubu has adequately utilised that opportunity in the fight against terrorism, with massive results to show for it,” Bwala wrote.

He added that the two leaders will also deliberate on the controversial claims that terrorists in Nigeria specifically target Christians, a narrative the Nigerian government has consistently rejected.

Trump had earlier accused the Nigerian government of ignoring attacks on Christians, declaring Nigeria a “country of particular concern.”

He claimed that thousands of Christians had been killed in the country and called on U.S. lawmakers to take immediate action.

The former U.S. President further warned that Washington could suspend aid to Nigeria and even consider military intervention if the alleged persecution continues.

“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the USA will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria and may very well go into that now disgraced country, guns-a-blazing,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

Bwala, however, stressed that the Tinubu administration remains committed to promoting religious harmony and tackling terrorism in all its forms.

He noted that the forthcoming meeting would also reinforce Nigeria’s partnership with the United States in global peace and security initiatives.
