Tinubu’s State House Spent N36bn On Foreign Trips In 2024

The Bola Tinubu-led presidency spent N36 billion on international travels in 2024, with N12.2 billion allocated to “international travel and transport (training)” and N24.19 billion for “international travel and transport (others),” according to data from the Open Treasury Portal.
Local travel expenses were also significant, with N15.8 billion spent on “local travel and transport (training)” and N31.2 billion on “local travel and transport (others).”

Opposition figure Peter Obi has criticised the frequency of Tinubu’s travels, questioning the necessity of the expenditure.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, defended the trips, insisting that Tinubu should embark on even more foreign travels.
He argued that the benefits outweigh the costs, citing a $2 million investment secured from Brazil to boost the livestock sector.
Reports also indicate that in just six months—between February and July 2024—the presidency spent N2.3 billion on foreign trips.
Payments made for these travels included N300 million in January, N250 million in February, and several other large sums throughout the year.
Furthermore, between February and March 2024, the government spent N2.9 billion on foreign exchange for trips involving Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to countries including Ethiopia, Switzerland, Liberia, France, and Côte d’Ivoire.
Amid the controversy, it was previously revealed that the presidential aircraft’s engine overhaul is expected to cost N8.6 billion in 2025.
