Tinubu’s Suspension of Rivers Governor Unconstitutional – Peter Obi
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing it as unconstitutional and a threat to democracy.
In a statement on Tuesday, Obi said, “The recent suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the President is not just unconstitutional but also a clear move towards anarchy.”
He also criticised the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, arguing that it was politically motivated.
“There is no basis for declaring a state of emergency in Rivers. This is simply an attempt to consolidate power and suppress democracy,” he said.
Obi warned that removing an elected governor under the guise of a state of emergency was dangerous for Nigeria’s democracy.
“A state of emergency does not give the President the right to unseat a duly elected governor. If this is allowed to stand, then we are setting a precedent that could destroy our democracy,” he added.
He urged the National Assembly and other institutions to act against what he called a violation of democratic principles.
“I call on the National Assembly and all democratic forces to rise up and defend our democracy before it is completely eroded,” he stated.
President Tinubu had earlier announced the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, citing governance instability.
“The crisis in Rivers State has stalled governance, and as President, I cannot sit back and allow the people to suffer,” Tinubu said.
He also accused Fubara of undermining the democratic process by demolishing the state House of Assembly.
“It is unacceptable for a sitting governor to demolish the state House of Assembly. Such actions cannot be tolerated in a democracy,” he declared.
