Today In History: Celebrating The Life Of Abba Kyari

On this day in history, April 17, Osun Defender travels back to April 17, 2020 when death took away Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Abba Kyari was a Nigerian politician and lawyer who served as the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari from August 2015 until his death on April 17, 2020.

Born on November 17, 1938, in Borno State, Nigeria, Kyari was an influential figure in Nigerian politics, known for his close relationship with President Buhari and his role in the administration’s key policy decisions.

Kyari had a background in law and sociology, holding degrees from the University of Warwick and Cambridge University in the UK, and later attending the Nigerian Law School. Before entering politics, he had a successful career in the legal, banking, and media sectors, which included serving as the editor of the Nigerian newspaper New Africa.

As Chief of Staff, Kyari played a central role in coordinating the activities of the President and was often described as one of Buhari’s most trusted advisors. He was involved in significant negotiations and decisions, particularly those related to Nigeria’s economic policies and security concerns, including the fight against Boko Haram.

Abba Kyari’s tenure, however, was not without controversy. He was often criticized for wielding significant influence, which some argued bypassed standard protocols and concentrated power within a small group.

Despite such criticisms, he remained a key figure throughout his tenure.
Kyari’s life came to an end after he contracted COVID-19 during a trip to Germany. He was diagnosed upon his return to Nigeria and died on April 17, 2020, at the age of 81.

His death marked one of the high-profile casualties of the pandemic in Nigeria and underscored the global reach and impact of the COVID-19 crisis.

Kyari’s passing was mourned by many, including President Buhari, who considered him a loyal friend and a dedicated public servant.

His death highlighted his central role in the administration and had significant implications for Nigerian politics, given his influential position within the government.
