Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), affectionately known as “Great Ife,” experienced a whirlwind of events in 2024 that left an indelible mark on the institution and its vibrant community. From tragic events, groundbreaking events and breakthroughs to inspiring celebrations.

1. Lion Kills OAU Veterinary Technologist

The management, staff, students and the entire campus of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have been thrown into mourning following the untimely death of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi.

A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that Mr Olawuyi, a Veterinary Technologist, who has been in charge of the Zoological garden for over a decade, was attacked this afternoon, Monday, 19th February, 2024, by a 9 – year old male lion when he was feeding them in their den at the Zoological garden of the University.

2.Agony As Car Kills Final Year Student On Way To Submit Project

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, was thrown into mourning on Thursday, following the death of a final year student, Esu Rita Ema.

The deceased, a student of the department of French tragically lost her life in a fatal accident near the university’s main gate.

The incident occurred around 12 PM as Rita was on her way to submit her final-year project.

3. Students Injured As Iconic OAU Amphitheatre Collapses

Not less than six students of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Osun State were reportedly rushed to the hospital following the sudden fall of the roof of the iconic Amphitheatre during a class on Thursday morning.

Osun Defender gathered that the incident was caused by a whirlwind which destroyed some parts of the roof of the Amphitheatre during SER 001 class scheduled to hold from 8 am to 9 am.

4. OAU Fresh Graduate Commits Suicide

A fresh graduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, from the Department of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, Osuolale Olamide has reportedly committed suicide.

Our correspondent gathered that the deceased took his life on Tuesday by taking a sniper in an hostel located in the town.

5. Two Injured In OAU Car Accident

No fewer than two persons have sustained injuries in a car accident involving a Toyota Camry on Road 1 route of the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

It was gathered that the incident which occurred on Monday evening was attributed to over speeding.

6. Fuel Scarcity: OAU Students Skip Classes, Lament Hike In Transportation Fares

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, residing off-campus are grappling with the challenge of commuting to school amidst the lingering fuel scarcity, which has resulted in a hike in transportation fares.

OSUN DEFENDER observed that students were trekking from the OAU campus to their off-campus residences, due to difficulty in securing transportation. The situation, according to some students who spoke to the medium, has made moving to and fro the school a long journey.

7. Rainstorm: OAU Management Seals Off Amphitheatre After Incident

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University has sealed off the Iconic Amphitheatre following the unfortunate incident caused by rainstorm this morning which injured six students of the university during SER 001 class.

Osun Defender observed that shortly after the incident, the venue, both inside and outside, was cordoned off with caution tape.

8. Chaos As Unknown Student Smashes Bottle, Makes Away With Ballot Box During OAU SU Election

There was chaos at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), on Wednesday evening as an unknown student, whose identity remains unknown, stormed a polling station, smashed a bottle, and made away with a ballot box during the institution’s Students’ Union election.

Osun Defender gathered that the incident occurred at the Faculty of Law polling units at 5pm, causing pandemonium and disruption to the Students’ Union election process.

9. Acadamic Activities Paralysed As ASUU OAU Joins NLC Strike

Academic activities at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have been put to a complete halt following the resolve of the affiliate unions – ASUU, SSANU and others, to comply with the strike action directed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

In a release sent to our correspondent, the chairperson of ASUU OAU, Anthony Odigwe stated that the union has received a directive from the National Secretariat to join the strike by the virtue of the fact that ASUU is an affiliate of NLC.

10. OAU Students Begin Struggle For Power As SU Lifts Ban On Campaign

The students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have begun to struggle for power, following the lifting of the ban on campaigns by the Electoral Commission of the Students’ Union.

In a press release issued by the Electoral Commission of the Union on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, and signed by the Chairman, Taofeek Ogunperi, and General Secretary, Damilare Olayinka, the Commission announced its commitment to releasing detailed guidelines, timelines, and procedures for campaign activities to ensure a smooth and transparent election process on campus.
