Traders Lament As Lagos Govt Sells Egg Above Market Price

Traders in Lagos are protesting the high cost of eggs sold to them by the Lagos State government.

A video watched online showed a government intervention transport truck from the Ministry of Agriculture selling eggs to traders at an inflated price.

The traders complained that they are forced to buy eggs at ₦4,500 per crate, contrary to the usual price of ₦3,500.

They expressed frustration, saying, “They told us to be patient, but they’re selling eggs to us at ₦4,500. We petty traders sell at ₦3,800, ₦3,500. Is that fair?”

They urged the government to assist them, saying, “We can’t afford to buy eggs at ₦4,500 per crate.”

The traders appealed to the government to reconsider the price, citing the high cost of living, including rice (₦80,000 per bag), vegetable oil (₦70,000 per keg), and petrol.

“They said we should be patience but a bag of rice is now 80,000, a keg of vegetable oil is 70,000, petrol price is high. For what reason should a crate of egg be sold for 4500, they should come to our aid.”

Osun Defender reports that the price of the egg has increased tremendously, making the common source of protein in the past out of the reach of many Nigerians.

The increase in cost of eggs according to poultry farmers was because feed has gone up and not commensurate to the rate at which the cost of feed materials is increasing.
