Traditionalists in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, have expressed concern over the activities of a Christian group at the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, calling on authorities to investigate the incident.

The reaction follows a viral video showing a cleric and members of his group conducting religious activities within the grove, a site widely regarded as sacred and of cultural significance.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that a video showing a pastor preaching inside the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove stirred outrage online, with many accusing him of disrespecting Yoruba traditional worship and violating a sacred cultural site.

The clip, posted on X by @spiritual_wife, shows a man dressed in white robes standing beside a shrine within the grove, touching parts of it, gesturing as he speaks, and appearing to declare the supremacy of Jesus Christ while describing the deity Osun as powerless.

The video triggered strong reactions, with many users condemning the act and calling for the pastor to be arrested for trespass and incitement.

Some Christians also criticised the action, arguing that religious freedom should not extend to entering another faith’s sacred ground to provoke worshippers.

Others warned that such conduct could further strain religious tolerance in the country.

One X user wrote, “This disrespect will not stop until traditionalists start suing all these people, taking every last penny from their pockets, and sending them to jail.”

Another user said, “This is religious extremism taken too far. Is Osun Shrine not a UNESCO Heritage Site? Is there no security to protect the site? If there is none, the Osun State Govt should provide it ASAP to prevent this type of incident occurring again. I recommend their arrest”

Speaking on behalf of traditionalists under the aegis of the Otuagasa Foundation, its founder, Chief Ogundeji Elebuibon, said the development has raised tension and requires urgent attention to prevent misunderstandings among religious groups.

He urged the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to engage its members on the need for mutual respect and peaceful coexistence among different faiths.

Elebuibon emphasised that the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove holds deep cultural and historical value, not only for traditional worshippers but also as a heritage site recognised globally.

“The grove represents an important aspect of our cultural identity and has existed for centuries. It should be treated with respect by all,” he said.

He also called on security agencies, particularly the police, to look into the matter and ensure that due process is followed in addressing any issues arising from the incident.

The traditionalist leader noted that the community has long maintained a culture of tolerance and openness, allowing access to the grove under regulated conditions, and stressed the importance of preserving peace and harmony in the state.
