The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, community has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Ibitayo Ajibola, a student of the Faculty of Dentistry, who reportedly took his own life shortly after the release of the semester examination results.
In a statement issued by university’s Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA) on Wednesday, signed by President Adebayo Idris, the association extended its condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and everyone affected by the tragedy.
Ajibola, who passed away on Tuesday, was said to have faced academic challenges in recent years, which may have contributed to his tragic action.
Reports have it that the deceased had a similar result last year and failed again this year, a situation that, under the university’s academic regulations, could lead to an automatic withdrawal from the course.
IFUDSA used Ajibola’s passing to highlight the difficult challenges faced by several students in their academic journey.
“This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind, but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face,” the President expressed.
The Association also encourages all members students to reach out to one another, offer support, and seek professional help when needed.
”Mental health is just as important as physical health; support yourselves and seek help when necessary, no one should ever feel alone in their struggles,” the statement read.
The association further reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for improved student welfare and mental health support within the faculty to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
