A trailer has reportedly caused the death of a yet-to-be-identified student of the Institute of Technology (IOT) at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.
The unfortunate accident which occured on Tuesday morning at the Sango roundabout area of the state capital left two other students with varying degrees of injuries.
It was gathered that the three students were on the motorcycle on their way to receive a lecture at the Polytechnic Institute of Technology centre in the Adewale area of Ilorin when the tragedy occurred.
The driver of the truck heading towards Maraba from Sango was said to have suddenly lost control while approaching the roundabout and violently hit a vehicle in front, which in turn hit the motorcycle with the three students.
Ot was further learnt that one of the students on the motorcycle, whose forehead seriously hit the pavement by the roadside, died instantly, while the other two, who sustained severe injuries, were instantly rushed to the hospital.
Police officers from the Traffic Control Unit of the command were still controlling traffic at the time of filing this report.
The spokeswoman of Kwara State Police Command, ASP Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said that the driver of the trailer truck has been detained by the police at the A Division, Challenge Area of Ilorin, while the truck too has been confiscated.
“It’s very unfortunate that a student’s life was lost to the incident; two others are currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital.
Though an investigation has commenced, it’s annoying that the driver of the truck could not slow down to obey the big bump at the roundabout and lost control to claim a life,” she said.
Similarly, the spokesperson of Kwara State Polytechnic, Hajia Halimat Garuba, confirmed the incident.
“Sadly, one of our students in IOT died in that accident. They were said to be on the motorcycle to attend a lecture when their motorcycle was violently hit by the trailer.
“Two other students who were also involved are said to be receiving treatment in a hospital. I can’t get you the details of their identities for now,” she said.
