No fewer than 30 passengers were injured on Friday when a train derailed along the Kerman-Zarand route in southern Iran.

Head of the Red Crescent Society’s Relief and Rescue Organisation, Babak Mahmoudi, confirmed the incident.

“Thirty people were injured when a train derailed on the Kerman-Zarand railway path,” he told Mehr news agency.

The national railway authority, in a statement shared via Tasnim news agency, said, “The timely arrival of railway technical personnel and rescue forces ensured that all passengers safely exited the train.”

Though no lives were lost, the incident has raised fresh concerns over railway safety in the country.

Train derailments are not new in Iran. In June 2022, 21 people lost their lives and many others were injured after a train crashed near the city of Tabas.

The train reportedly hit an excavator parked close to the tracks.

In 2016, two trains collided and caught fire in northern Iran, killing 44 people and leaving many others wounded.
